Affiliate Marketing Step One: Choose the Right Topic
The importance of topic selection cannot be overstated.
As an affiliate marketer, you are basically an Internet publisher whose content--articles, reviews, blog, etc.--attracts people interested in what you are talking about. You place links on your website that lead visitors other websites, your affiliate partners, where the visitors then (hopefully) become customers--and then you receive a cut of the sale.
For example, let's say that you know a lot about herbal health products. Enough to write several books. Instead of writing several books (you may do that later), you make a website, to which you begin posting compelling, informative articles about all aspects of herbal health products.
You then partner with an herbal health product affiliate program, which agrees to pay you $30 for every paying customer that comes to them through your website. Thinking that's worth a try, you put your affiliate partner's links next to your articles, and every time one of your readers goes to their website and buys a product, you get paid $30.
Repeat that process hundreds or even thousands of times and you're reaping terrific profits.
Nice. And it's well within the realm of possibility. Every day, thousands of people are searching for information about herbal health products. If you can meet that need, you can get rich.
Notice well, however, the connection between topic and commerce. A series of articles about some crazy stuff that happened in band camp when you were a kid is probably not as profitable of a topic as herbal health products. Unless you partner with a tuba-selling website, which, hey, stranger things have happened. The point, though, from herbs to tubas, is the same:
To choose the right topic, think like a business person, because that's what excellent affiliate marketing is: a business, not a hobby. So do what the pros do. Research what products and services people are looking for on the Internet. Research who's already talking about those topics, and how well they're doing it. Is there a market here? Can you serve it?
By choosing a topic that both means something to you personally and consistently leads to sold products, you are well on your way to becoming an excellent affiliate.
